100 Promising Bible Verses About Grief and Hope

The Bible has much to say about grief, hope, and comfort in a time of loss. In fact, one might view the central theme of the Scriptures as one of suffering — specifically, the suffering of the Righteous One on behalf of those who suffer from sin and have no hope.

A careful, faithful reading of God’s word provides “all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3). This is particularly true for those who grieve.

Grief and Hope in the Bible

God’s word is truly robust, containing accurate descriptions of reality, a rich understanding of human nature, a realistic framework for grief, and lasting help for those who mourn.

The Scriptures acknowledge the reality of grief.

Grief is a natural response to loss, and believers and unbelievers alike feel its presence in our lives in this fallen world. God’s word helps us to honestly confront and express grief.

The Scriptures provide comfort to those who grieve.

We can turn to the Lord for comfort, guidance, and hope in the midst of the worst trials. God has wisdom, solace, and assurance to give as we cling to his promises.

The Scriptures provide confidence in God’s sovereign hand.

God wisely rules over all situations in such a way that he uses even the worst thing that has ever happened – the unjust death of the only truly innocent and righteous man who ever lived – to result in good. That is why, by faith, we can find peace even in the darkest times.

The Scriptures allow time for healing.

“How long, O Lord?” the Psalmist cries out in Psalm 13:1. “Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” In God’s word there is recognition that our trials sometimes last for a long time, and the length of the healing process will vary from person to person and from situation to situation.

The Scriptures teach us to bear one another’s burdens.

You’re not alone in your grief and pain. God has designed his body, the church, so that you have a built-in community of support in your time of grief.

The Scriptures point us to a true resurrection hope in Christ.

Through Christ’s victory over death, all who put their trust in him have the assurance of eternal life and full restoration in the New Heavens and New Earth. The Bible promises a complete triumph over sin, death, and the grave through the saving work of Christ. That is a promise you can rely on.

Now it’s time to look at some of these Scriptures. As you do, my prayer is that you would read them as what they are: The very words of God.

Here are over 100 promising Bible verses about grief and hope, taken from over 50 different passages throughout the Old and New Testaments.

Scriptures About Grief

These Bible passages tell us about the experience of grief. While it’s helpful to have an understanding of the grieving process, there’s nothing like God’s word to help us understand the inner workings of the heart.

Remember that when Jesus was confronted with the death of his friend, even knowing the resurrection that was about to take place, He wept. He felt the bitter pain of loss while trusting in his Father perfectly.

Let the following Bible verses about grief and hope renew your mind in the midst of your mourning, knowing that God understands what you’re feeling right now because He designed you to function this way.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

1 Corinthians 15:55-57

Where, O death, is your victory?

Where, O death, is your sting?

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 41:10

Fear not, for I am with you;

    be not dismayed, for I am your God;

    and is bowed down within me.

But this I call to mind,
    and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
    his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning;

Great is your faithfulness.

“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
    “therefore I will hope in him.”

Ecclesiastes 7:2-4

It is better to go to the house of mourning
    than to go to the house of feasting,
for this is the end of all mankind,
    and the living will lay it to heart.

Sorrow is better than laughter,
    for by sadness of face the heart is made glad.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,
    but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

He was despised and rejected by men,
    a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
    he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    smitten by God, and afflicted.

But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    and with his wounds we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

Psalm 34:18

Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.

Psalm 86:1-13

Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me,
    for I am poor and needy.

Preserve my life, for I am godly;
    save your servant, who trusts in you—you are my God.

Be gracious to me, O Lord,
    for to you do I cry all the day.

Gladden the soul of your servant,
    for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,
    abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.

Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
    listen to my plea for grace.

In the day of my trouble I call upon you,
    for you answer me.

There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
    nor are there any works like yours.

All the nations you have made shall come
    and worship before you, O Lord,
    and shall glorify your name.

For you are great and do wondrous things;
    you alone are God.

Teach me your way, O Lord,
    that I may walk in your truth;
    unite my heart to fear your name.

I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
    and I will glorify your name forever.

For great is your steadfast love toward me;
    you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.
